West End star brings the musical Cats to the children of Sheffield

Hot on the heels of the spectacular Cats the Musical, one of the London cast members from the West End stage show paid a visit to Razzamataz Theatre School to deliver a full day of workshops to children and teenagers in Sheffield.

Benjamin Yates has worked extensively in musical theatre after training at Arts Educational Schools London in Musical Theatre. His theatre credits include Understudy Tony in West Side Story, Aladdin, Mungojerrie in CATS The Musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sonny Latierri in Grease and Jack and the Beanstalk.

The Cats workshop is exclusive to Razzamataz Sheffield students and is provided free of charge during their normal session time.

“We believe it is important to encourage more children and young people to get into performing arts, which is shown to not only have positive effects on health and wellbeing but also on confidence and self-esteem, massively important for children and teenagers in today’s high pressured society,” says Helen Bell, Principal of Razzamataz Sheffield.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my love for this wonderful show with children and young people in Sheffield,” says Benjamin. “From my past experience, students really get a lot out of these types of workshops. The opportunity to ask questions about appearing in a West End show and the life of a professional performer is fascinating to many children and teenagers who want to take their love of performing onto the next level.”

As part of its pledge to keep up to date with current performance trends, Razzamataz works with professional musicians, dancers and actors to run special workshops on a regular basis to inspire and mentor students.

“Mentoring enables the students to feel supported and encouraged and will allow them to maximize their potential, develop their skills and improve their performance levels,” adds Helen. “These are important life skills to have and just as important to those children who don’t take their performing arts training any further than just having a bit of fun on the weekend.”
